Don't try and win it from the starting line to the water's edge -
Most people have seen the start of a triathlon either in-person or on TV. Hundreds of wetsuit clad lunatics sprinting towards the edge of the ocean as if their hair was on fire. How manypeople have ever cemented a win in the first 10 seconds of a race?
Instead of skyrocketing your heart rate and putting yourself in a position to get elbowed, kicked, or pulled, why not move toward the edge of your wave and position yourself a few meters back?
When the gun goes off, let the hardcore speedsters (or wanna-be's) do their drag race to the surf while you calmly stroll to the water and enter in-control and feeling confident. The 5 seconds or so that you "lose" will be more than made up for as you start the race in style.
